When Research Paper Footnotes Are Necessary

The Purpose behind the Research Paper Footnote

Research papers are a lot different than other types of academic papers, especially in format and style — and especially with the inclusion of research paper footnotes. Not every paper requires footnotes. In text citations are typically more common, although it depends on the style of the paper you are writing. So let’s take a look at when footnotes are appropriate and when they can make your paper more organized — not to mention when they will actually be required.

First off, let us talk about when research paper footnotes are actually required.  Basically, this will be when you write an APA style research paper, and often it applies to the Chicago format of research paper writing as well.  Footnotes are typically used in these styles, partly because the subjects which usually use this styles tend to be very in depth.  For example, you can see how writing a sociology paper, which requires a lot of research, could be made neater and easier to read with the use of footnotes rather than in text citations.

It can take a while to get used to writing footnotes.  The best way to do so is by using them all through the research paper writing process.  For example, as you begin taking notes, make sure that you put all the quotations and information you want to use on your note cards.  This information will later comprise your footnotes, but having it right there at your disposal will make it easier to insert all of those quotes and facts into your paper.

Of course, this is not the only type of research paper format which will allow you to use research paper footnotes.  MLA papers can use footnotes as well.  Typically, people enjoy using footnotes in their papers versus in text citations because they make the paper look less cluttered.  These papers make for just as interesting research papers as any other kind.  You are not taking anything away from the content, you are just making it easier for your readers to get through the paper and understand it.  This can actually be beneficial to you.  Remember, the easier to read, the better your paper will go over.  And always remember, just because your paper is reader friendly does not mean that it is not interesting, thought provoking, or well thought out.  It is actually essential that readers find your paper easy to get through.  It should be smoothly flowing, and the use of footnotes can help that happen.

Research paper footnotes are actually preferable for a number of different reasons.  For example, you can shorten them if you have already written one footnote incorporating the source you are quoting.  It is difficult to do this with in text citations because although there are rules which allow you to do so, you still have a lot of information stuck right in the middle of your paper.  Before beginning the research paper writing process when you are using footnotes, however, make sure that you know your professor’s preference.  There are different types of footnotes.
