The Key to Writing an Interesting College Research Paper

You will write many research papers during your academic career, even if you do not continue your education after high school.  However, college research papers are a different breed altogether.  They need to be more detailed, more thoroughly researched, more in depth, and they are even typically much, much longer than the ones you will write in high school.  Without a doubt, your high school teachers will be preparing you for the papers you will write at the college or university you attend.  However, they can only prep you so much.  In the college environment, you are generally left to sink or swim.  You will get lots of help from your instructors, of course, but the point is that it is always better to know what you are in for even before you get there.

Now, as stated, you are going to be writing a lot of college research papers.  As a matter of fact, there is a good chance that you will have to write one in practically every class you take.  There are even some math classes which will require you to research and write a paper.  This may be a biased opinion, but English research papers are some of the most interesting papers you will have to write.  It really does not matter what course you are taking — Shakespearean drama, 18th Century Literature, courses devoted to fairy tales, et cetera.  They all provide wonderful opportunities to write fun and interesting papers, if you look at it the right way.

Throughout your college career, depending only on what courses you are taking, you will have to write  business research papers, or biology papers, chemistry papers, papers on interpersonal communications, and so on and on and on.

One thing you need to know going into college is the proper research paper format — or formats, as the case may be correctly.  Most of these, you will learn in high school.  At the very least, you will come into college knowing the proper MLA style of format.  Once in college, you will also need to familiarize yourself with other formats, such as APA and Chicago style.

The next thing you need to know is how to come up with good research paper topics, no matter what the paper is for, what it is about, or what the general subject is.  To this end, you need to know a few things.  First and foremost, you never want to choose the easy topic.  The easy topics have all been written about ad nauseam.  They are boring.  You want your topic to be interesting and thought provoking.  Otherwise you could get a bad grade just for being uninteresting.

Finally, college research papers are hugely dependent on research paper titles.  A good title is as important as an interesting topic.  You want it to be eye catching.  You want it to grab the reader’s attention above all else — otherwise your reader will just pass right over it.  The best thing you can possibly do is grab the reader by the throat — figuratively speaking — right from the beginning.

Remember these Guidelines for Research Paper Format

A research paper format is simply how your paper looks like when you submit it to your professor. Where do you place the title? Where do you put the pages? These and some other things are also important in your research paper. It helps it making your paper look formal and uniform with the others.

These are the guidelines in formatting college research papers:

1. Use a 8 ½” x 11” white paper. Don’t use paper with designs or borders. A quality plain essay is the convention.

2. The research paper format for MLA paper usually doesn’t need a title page especially if it is only a 10-page paper. In the first page of your paper, write the following one entry per line against the left margin double-spaced:

• Name
• Name of your Professor
• Name of the Class
• Date

After these, write your title in the center of the paper. The research paper titles are not in all caps or in bold. However, you should capitalize all first letters of the words except for the prepositions.

3. For the pagination of an MLA research paper format, you put the page number in the right header and then followed by your surname.

4. Spacing is double-spaced for the entire paper. Do not put extra spaces below the title and in between paragraphs.

5. If your professor or teacher doesn’t give instructions on fonts, most research paper styles use 12 pt. Times New Roman.

6. MLA doesn’t give any guidelines for the sub-titles. Many research paper samples put them against the left margin simply because it looks more appropriate than putting them in center.

Although frequently overlooked, your research paper format can give added value to your paper.   A properly formatted paper will give the impression that you took time to submit a clean and formal paper.  It will help in your professor’s or teacher’s decision on what grade to give your research paper. Even with your paper, first impressions also last.

Sample Topics for Interesting College Research Papers

Ah, college research papers – not so different from high school research papers, and yet there is a vast world of difference between them. After all, there is a world of difference between college and high school as well, so it only stands to reason that the writing is dissimilar as well. You have to realize however that you are most likely expecting the worst and, in so doing, are making things seem much more difficult than they really need to be. Writing in college is not only worlds away from what you did in high school, but it actually has the potential to be much, much more interesting. Believe it or not, you might even have some fun!

One of the biggest differences between college research papers and those you wrote in high school is freedom. By and large, the research papers you write in college have no boundaries. As long as they pertain to what you have learned or are learning in the particular class you are writing for, then the world is your oyster and you can choose pretty much any topic you want. Oh sure, sometimes your professors will have a list of acceptable topics, but more often than not they will also make it clear than you can choose a different topic, as long as you run it by them first. Bear in mind, however, that these restrictions generally pertain to lower level classes, such as the ones you will be taking as a freshman and sophomore. This is just because they are your first classes as a college student and your instructors want to make sure you have a good foundation. Although your high school teachers seek to prepare you for college level writing, they can only do so much. The professors you encounter during your first semesters are simply trying to continue in that vein. In their way, they are actually trying to make sure that you will not be overwhelmed by the level of academic writing your college instructors will later expect.

Writing college research papers also gives you the opportunity to have some fun with it, as mentioned above. For instance, in college you get to experience the joy of utilizing controversial research paper topics which will really provoke emotions in your readers. Positive, negative, you can rest assured that you can definitely instigate some very interesting discussions. They make for a great break from the normal routine of homework, essays, and exams.

See, things that just would not be allowed in high school are fair game in college. For instance, could you – or any of your classmates – have turned in any cloning research papers in your high school science or biology class? Not likely, unless you went to an extremely liberal school! Things like that simply are not done – but they are totally acceptable in college. The same goes for a death penalty research paper – likely only allowed in some honors courses in some high schools, but par for the course once you get to college.

College research papers are entirely different, and they open up a whole new world of academic writing. An English paper is not just an English paper – you can go full out and write a Macbeth research paper instead. You can get interesting, innovative, and imaginative. Not only will that reflect in your grade, but you might just discover a love of writing that you never even knew you had.
