Literary Research Paper

Sometimes, it is really hard to come up with a topic interest to write for a literary research paper. I too was really bored to conduct researching with such a topic domain but I realized also that there is a sense of fulfillment in doing research papers on the topic that you do not really want to talk about. Sounds weird?

Actually, you can gain more than simply enhancing your writing skills. With a literary research paper, you get to discover more information that you previously have taken for granted. This type of a document can also help you appreciate more the things that relate to literature and the arts. Also, you will become well versed in identifying the correct research paper format that you can use when writing other types of research papers.

A literary research paper can also mean researching about topics that you are unfamiliar with. If you do not know anything about Shakespeare’s’ works other than Romeo and Juliet, then you will get to discover more of his finest novels. A literary research paper therefore gives you the opportunity to know more about different scopes of literature.

Interesting research topics need not be too technical or too popular in order to capture a great number of readers, it is in the way of presenting the topic interest that entices readers to recognize one work to be worthy. If you can make a title that involves criticisms or presenting a newer approach in discussing something, then you can have audiences for your literary research paper.

The Key to Writing the Best Hamlet Research Papers

Very rarely do you get to have a good time when writing a research paper.  However, you will have that opportunity when you have to write a Hamlet research paper.  Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most intriguing characters.  In fact, it is a lucky student indeed who gets the chance to write at least one Shakespeare research paper during the course of his or her academic career.

Now, naturally, English and literature majors will probably have a good time writing English research papers, regardless of the subject.  However, when Shakespeare is involved, any student can have a good time, as long as you allow yourself.  You can make that significantly easier by doing all that you can to pick an interesting topic about which you can have a good time writing.

Some possible research paper ideas for a Hamlet research paper include thinking about Aristotle, who stated that two of the most vital aspects of a good drama are probability and consistency. How do the characters in Hamlet conform to this idea – or do they at all? You can not only use both Aristotle and Shakespeare’s works in a paper focusing on this topic, but you can also compare Hamlet with other plays written during Shakespeare’s time and discuss how they do or do not conform to Aristotle’s theories on drama.

You could also look into the way Shakespeare uses classical allusions in his plays, and Hamlet in particular, of course. This would give you the opportunity to look at different plays and dramas from a variety of eras, perhaps to discover if such allusions are commonplace in most dramatic works.

If you would like to write a Hamlet research paper with a bit of a psychological bent, you can focus on Hamlet’s madness. Now, you might think that focusing on this would fall under the “unoriginal” category. However, while it was true that a lot of papers and essays focus on the Prince’s insanity, this is one of those cases when you have the opportunity to put a unique spin on a frequently researched topic. Now, most people want to know whether Hamlet was feigning his madness or if it was real. By researching today’s diagnosis of “madness,” you could develop a very thought provoking thesis about this topic.

As with the majority of Shakespeare’s works, there are literally hundreds of different topics around which you could base a well rounded, interesting, and intriguing Hamlet research paper. You just need to take the time to really study the nuances of the play and its characters, both the main protagonists and the smaller roles. There is no question that writing a literary research paper can be fun, especially when it is based on one or more of Shakespeare’s plays or poems, and especially when the writer in question has a literary bent. That is the real key to writing a good paper, no matter what it is about: try to make it fun, try to make sure that you enjoy your topic. Your pleasure will show through in your writing every time.

Are you are Literature Major? Or are you enrolled in a Literature class? Are you looking for interesting research paper topics for your literature class? Writing a research paper is inevitable for you. It is the best way for you to show that you have learned reading strategies in your class. It is also a way for your professor to gauge whether you have the ability for independently extracting insights from literary works.

Here are some research paper topic ideas for literature:

You can choose by looking at literature according to poetry, short story, drama or novel. Which among these do you think you can handle? Do you like writing poetry? Why not write about your favorite poet? Do you like watching movies? You can write about drama which in many ways is like a movie. There are thousands of stage plays that are adapted for the screen.

One of the interesting research paper topics that many Literature majors work on is any one of the different themes like love, death, friendship, sex, family, freedom, beauty, time. Choose only one theme, for example, death and then choose one or two short stories or poems and then analyze what they say about death. You can choose 2 Emily Dickinson’s poems and talk about what she thinks about death.

You can also write about literary periods. For English research papers, you can talk about the Romantic or the Victorian period. Choose one famous author and study his or her work in connection with the period in which he or she is in. For example, you can write a Macbeth research paper and talk about the Victorian ideas in the work. You can also select a modern work and research how this work reflects a particular trait of the modern times. For example, you can take a look at Franz Kafka’s works and study how they reflect the commercialism of the modern times.

Steps in Writing a Literary Research Paper

Your teacher has given you a literary work (short story, novel, drama or poetry) and she wants you to write a literary research paper about it. You have read the literary work over and over again and you still feel that you cannot start writing about it. You don’t know what to do. Don’t panic. Writing a research paper will be easy if you know the steps on how to do it, it is not impossible to come up with a paper that will receive a high grade from your teacher.

Writing about literature is an exercise in coming up with your own interpretation of a literary work based on your analysis of the work and your study of the interpretations of others about the same work. You need to come up with your opinion about the literary work and then prove that that your opinion is correct. Your opinion about the work is your research paper thesis.

An example of a simple thesis statement is this: “Hamlet is only pretending to be insane.” This is the result of your study of Hamlet and this is a good thesis statement because you can prove it by looking for other works that share the same interpretation. Reading up on other writers who have written about the literary work assigned to you is also another way to come up with research paper topic ideas if you still don’t have one.

When you have your thesis statement, do some research. Read up on other works that you think will support your argument. Write an outline of the main points that you will tackle. For a 10-page literary research paper, you only need to tackle 3 or 4 sub-topics. For the thesis statement of Hamlet that we have mentioned earlier, you can list down 3 reasons why you think Hamlet is not really insane. These 3 reasons will be your 3 main points. This is how to easily come up with a research paper outline.

When you have your outline, it will not be overwhelming to start writing your paper anymore. Introduce your topic by writing something general that will lead to your thesis statement. When you are writing about Hamlet, for example, you may say general opinions about it. You can start by saying, “Is Hamlet really insane or is he just pretending?” This will then lead to your thesis statement of your literary research paper.

In the body of your paper, tackle the 3 main points in your outline. Use the works of authors who have the same interpretation of the work. Just make sure that you don’t just say what they said. Instead, use what they said to support your points. For this kind of paper, you will mostly likely be instructed to write the body using the MLA format. Make sure that when you use an idea of an author, you cite the author properly.

End your paper with a paragraph that summarizes what you did in your paper. Mention your 3 main points and end by re-instating your thesis statement without repeating the same words.

There you have it your literary research paper with a good thesis statement, good sources to support your thesis statement, outline that will help you in your writing, introduction that states your argument, body that tackles your 3 main points and ending that re-states your thesis. Easy!

Possible Topics for Hamlet Research Papers

When you get to write a paper, such as a Hamlet research paper, about the Bard’s greatest works, then you are a truly lucky student. English and literature majors in particular should enjoy an assignment like this, if only because Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most interesting plays. It is full of betrayal, love, passion, sex, murder, treason, and intrigue. Everyone important is dead by the end of the play, what more could you possibly ask for in a writing assignment? Bearing that in mind, why don’t we take a look at some very provocative topics you could use when writing a paper on Hamlet?

The first thing you have to realize is how many interesting research paper topics there are when you are asked to write a Hamlet research paper. The entire play is interesting. It is like the modern day version of a juicy murder mystery, but beautifully written and full of twists and turns. Hamlet, melancholy and eager to avenge his father’s death, is one of the most thought provoking and intriguing protagonists in all of English literature.

As with a Macbeth research paper, there are many sub plots to consider when choosing a topic. You will find few English research papers more fun than one based on the Bard, who knew better than perhaps any other playwright how to keep his readers always on the edges of their seats. That being said, one possible topic involves focusing on Hamlet’s foils. You have several choices here, namely Horatio, Fortinbras, Claudius, and Laertes. By comparing – and contrasting – Hamlet with each of these characters, you will better be able to understand the personalities and traits of each.

We have mentioned the prince’s melancholy. That itself makes an excellent topic for a Hamlet research paper. For instance, do you think he was too melancholy? It certainly interfered with his ability to act, to confront Claudius, at least in the beginning of the play. Indeed, his deep seeded melancholia even plays a part in the watery death of sweet, mad Ophelia, his beloved. It is his tragic flaw, and many critics and readers believe that it is what led to his ultimate demise. Exploring that idea can make for a great research paper, as long as you know where to look to find the evidence needed to back up that claim.

The prince’s own madness also makes an interesting topic for a Hamlet research paper. Throughout the play, he claims to be faking his madness, yet there is a very real sense of insanity pervasive in his character. A good literary research paper considers everything, both the seen and the unseen, the obvious and the points which are only hinted at in the subtext. The best essays and research papers, no matter what they are based on, consider every angle. That is what makes Hamlet the perfect subject for a paper. From researching whether his love for Ophelia is genuine to turning your attention to the intriguing but short lived characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, there are no wrong choices. Shakespeare gives you so much from which to work that the prince’s world is your oyster. Something is unquestionably rotten in the state of Denmark; it is simply up to you to find out what it really is.

Writing English Research Papers Can be Fun

You are reading that title correctly – writing English research papers can indeed be fun.  This is especially true in college, where the topics are generally left up to you.  You can write about whatever you like, as long as it pertains to the class you are taking.  When you realize that something controversial, racy, mysterious, or otherwise intriguing can be found behind the writing, or writer, of just about every book, poem, narrative, college essay, et cetera, the whole process is akin to sniffing out a mystery.

No matter what course you are taking, you are guaranteed a bevy of interesting research paper topics.  For the sake of this article, let us say that you are taking the literature of the Renaissance, spanning the years between 1485 and 1603.  This was a rich, extremely interesting period for the arts in general and for literature in particular.  You could write a literary research paper on Henry VIII – an intriguing man all the way around, someone who managed to be both repugnant and charismatic – Shakespeare, Sir Walter Ralegh, Elizabeth I – or Christopher Marlowe.  Any number of English research papers could revolve around the talented Mr. Marlowe, an accused atheist, homosexual, and heretic who was murdered by being stabbed through the eye.  One of his most known and arguably best works is Edward the II, a play which incorporates the king’s own sexuality as part of the plot.

Aspects of both the poet and playwright’s life and his work would make for many interesting term papers.  You could tie his personal life into his writing, you could compare him to his contemporaries, or you could theorize over how his personal life influenced his writing.  And these are only examples of possible English research papers – but certainly it illustrates how intriguing and even controversial (which is always extremely fun) they can see.

As you can clearly see, there is no limit to the number of research paper ideas you can garner from this subject.  Besides, that is only one genre, one period in literary history.  If you are studying eighteenth century literature, there are several emerging female authors about whom to write.  The sermons of the newly arrived Puritans make for surprisingly provocative interesting research papers.

Research paper writing is generally viewed as a burden, but it does not need to be that way, especially not with English research papers.  Presumably, those who are majoring in English or literature will enjoy them as a matter of course.  If writing and/or literature is not something you enjoy, just stop and consider the biographies and works of several of the writers you are studying in your course.  Look for something that piques your interesting – a suspicious story, a strange childhood happening, a checkered past, a weird legend behind a story, play, or poem.  You will be surprised at the drama you can find – and gossip, even if it is centuries old, can always fuel a great debate!  All you will have to do is get it down on paper.
