So let’s take a look at when footnotes are appropriate and when they can make your paper more organized — not to mention when they will actually be required.

First off, let us talk about when research paper footnotes are actually required.  Basically, this will be when you write an APA style research paper, and often it applies to the Chicago format of research paper writing as well.  Footnotes are typically used in these styles, partly because the subjects which usually use this styles tend to be very in depth.  For example, you can see how writing a sociology paper, which requires a lot of research, could be made neater and easier to read with the use of footnotes rather than in text citations.

What Chicago Style Research Papers Require

You never know what format your research paper will require; most require MLA and APA format, but due to the nature of your course or the preferences of your professor, you will no doubt find yourself writing many a Chicago style research paper as well. The format is not really difficult to follow, and there are several ways to tell if a paper should indeed follow this style.

A Chicago style research paper is most common in history courses, as well as other courses based in the humanities.  Generally, in the essays and research papers which require Chicago format, you will have to write a response to a couple of different readings.  Of course, research papers in this style will require a lot of different sources.

The main thing to remember about this research paper format is that it utilizes footnotes, or endnotes; whatever you want to call them, they are often difficult for students to deal with the first time they write a Chicago paper.  It is far easier to write up a simple in text citation, as is seen in other research paper styles like APA and MLA.  However, once you get the hang of marking your footnotes, you will find it gets easier and easier to remember them.  Like any other type of paper, it will include a section devoted to the bibliography.

For the sake of this article, let’s say you are writing a paper an anthropology class – Magic and Religion in Preliterate Society, for example.  Anthropology is a humanities course, and would reasonably require this particular research paper format.  Here is an example of what a footnote would look like in a Chicago based paper:

In the Beng culture, there is a disease known as gbri which means dirt and “a baby gets it if she’s touched by a woman who’s considered sexually polluted.”¹

The endnote (or footnote) will look like this:

As you can see, the name of the author – or authors – go first, followed by the title of the document.  It is not underlined.  The city in which the publisher is located, the name of the publisher, and the year the work was published go in parenthesis.  This is followed by the page of the work on which the quote or citation is located.  As you can also see, this portion of a Chicago style research paper uses commas rather than periods.  The same is not so for the actual citation in the bibliography, which looks like this:

Remember these Guidelines for Research Paper Format

A research paper format is simply how your paper looks like when you submit it to your professor. Where do you place the title? Where do you put the pages? These and some other things are also important in your research paper. It helps it making your paper look formal and uniform with the others.

These are the guidelines in formatting college research papers:

1. Use a 8 ½” x 11” white paper. Don’t use paper with designs or borders. A quality plain essay is the convention.

2. The research paper format for MLA paper usually doesn’t need a title page especially if it is only a 10-page paper. In the first page of your paper, write the following one entry per line against the left margin double-spaced:

• Name
• Name of your Professor
• Name of the Class
• Date

After these, write your title in the center of the paper. The research paper titles are not in all caps or in bold. However, you should capitalize all first letters of the words except for the prepositions.

3. For the pagination of an MLA research paper format, you put the page number in the right header and then followed by your surname.

4. Spacing is double-spaced for the entire paper. Do not put extra spaces below the title and in between paragraphs.

5. If your professor or teacher doesn’t give instructions on fonts, most research paper styles use 12 pt. Times New Roman.

6. MLA doesn’t give any guidelines for the sub-titles. Many research paper samples put them against the left margin simply because it looks more appropriate than putting them in center.

Although frequently overlooked, your research paper format can give added value to your paper.   A properly formatted paper will give the impression that you took time to submit a clean and formal paper.  It will help in your professor’s or teacher’s decision on what grade to give your research paper.
