Understanding Reflective Research Papers

As you will know, you will write lots of research papers throughout the course of your academic career. Some of them will be written in high school; some of them will be written in college; and still others will be written beyond that point, in graduate school. One of the most common papers you will find yourself faced with writing is the reflective research paper. As it so happens however, this type of paper is also the least understood by a lot of students. Hopefully, the following post will clear things up for you quite a bit.

Reflective essays and research papers are considered rather easy to write, especially if you are involved in a major or field of study which involves a lot of writing intensive aspects. These days, of course, that could apply to just about any field of study. The funny thing is that not a lot of students are trained when it comes to knowing how to write a reflective research paper. Just to emphasize this point, your humble author hear, English major extraordinaire, had no clue what this kind of paper entailed!

However, the good news is that once you understand what precisely a reflective research paper entails, you will likely find it one of the easiest research paper styles to master. Just as the term itself implies, a paper like this is going to be based partly on reflection. Naturally, a reflective essay can rely more on the author’s own reflection; when research is involved, you have to balance a very fine line. You will get to express your own ideas, but you have to incorporate plenty of factual information to firmly back up what you think and feel. This will allow you to write many, many interesting research papers, but straddling that line is incredibly important. Otherwise, you might as well just be writing an essay.

Now, as to this balance we keep talking about, you have to be extremely careful. You cannot express your own personal thoughts too much, and you have to be careful and tasteful about the way you present them. Naturally there will be some bias in a paper like this, simply because it does rely on your own reflections quite a bit. However, as we mentioned, it is vital to make sure that there is plenty of factual information to back up your personal thoughts. There has to be something concrete and logical there.

Writing a reflective research paper provides you with a wealth of different opportunities to come up with interesting research paper topic ideas, you simply have to choose carefully and, perhaps more importantly, you have to write carefully. You can always talk to your instructor to get a better idea of how to outline your paper if you are not sure how to go about this. Just remember that these research papers provide you with the unique opportunity to include your personal thoughts and opinions, which can make the whole writing process be much more interesting for you.

Research Paper Styles

There are many research paper styles that you can choose from. We will discuss the two of the basic parameters that you can classify in terms of styles in writing a research paper.

A research paper intends to present the results of the actual research process. Basically, you need to have a thesis statement first. This statement will serve as the basic idea of the proposal as well as becoming the guide for writing and delegating the results.

In terms of intention or goal in writing, we can discuss the research paper styles. One of the most popular ones is the expository type of a research paper. The goal is to expose more information out of a seemingly ordinary subject parameter. It is like discovering new knowledge through researching. You can check our article in explaining the expository research paper in our Archives. Another two common types of research paper goals are argumentative and persuasive genres which are both self explanatory.

In terms of the citation format, there are at least two basic research paper styles that you can use. The first one is the APA format. You can utilize this for your science themed topic papers. The MLA format on the other hand is for the humanities and the arts genre. Both of these styles have corresponding pagination, in-text citation and bibliography page writing formats that you can learn.

You can learn more research paper formats in writing. Please go to our Samples or Archives for these materials.

Research Paper Citations Explained

Why Your Research Paper Citation Needs to be Perfect

When writing research papers, you are essentially taking most of the information from another source — which is why research paper citations are so important. Even more importantly, they need to be formatted correctly. This is where a lot of students run into trouble. After all, there are so many different formats: MLA, APA, and Chicago style are just a few of the formats commonly used. So, in addition to discussing why correct citations are so important, we are also going to see a few examples for each separate style.

As mentioned, there are several different types of research paper citations. The MLA format research paper is one of the most common, especially in English and literature courses. There, it is the preferred format. It is arguably one of the easiest styles to master. It is also generally the first style that we learn, as it is used both in high school and in lower level college courses. Once you get higher up, however, it is most common in literature courses.

In MLA format, in text citations are relatively simple. When quoting directly or indirectly from the text, you cite using author-page format. So, if you were quoting from “She Walks in Beauty,” written by Lord Byron, and it appeared on the twentieth page of the book you used, the in text citation would appear as follows: According to the poet, talking about the lady in question, “she walks in beauty like the night” (Byron 20). The quotations do not include the citation, and the proper punctuation follows the citation rather than the quote itself.

Another common paper is the APA style research paper. This paper is significantly different than one which uses the MLA format. With short quotations, you need to include the author of the work, the year it was published, and the page number where the quote takes place. In the in text citation, the page number is preceded by a “p.” The quote should be introduced by a short statement which includes the last name of the author; the publication date should follow, in parentheses. Longer quotations in this style should be placed in a block style quote, without any quotation marks. Again, it should be introduced with the author’s last name and the date of publications. It should end with the page number.

Research paper citations for a Chicago style research paper are somewhat less complicated, but a bit more difficult to master if you are not used to this style. As mentioned in a recent post here, these papers rely on footnotes and endnotes rather than in text citations. Remembering to insert a footnote is probably the most difficult thing to remember, but once you get the hang of it, you may find that a Chicago style research paper is actually the easiest of all the different styles. Certainly, there is plenty of information out there to help you learn how to cite an essay in all different formats.

There are so many different research paper styles that mastering all the different research paper citations can be somewhat difficult. However, with a little practice you will surely discover that in text citations become second nature. Just remember, MLA, APA, and Chicago style are the most common, so familiarizing yourself with these styles can save you a lot of time and trouble.

What Chicago Style Research Papers Require

You never know what format your research paper will require; most require MLA and APA format, but due to the nature of your course or the preferences of your professor, you will no doubt find yourself writing many a Chicago style research paper as well. The format is not really difficult to follow, and there are several ways to tell if a paper should indeed follow this style.

A Chicago style research paper is most common in history courses, as well as other courses based in the humanities.  Generally, in the essays and research papers which require Chicago format, you will have to write a response to a couple of different readings.  Of course, research papers in this style will require a lot of different sources.

The main thing to remember about this research paper format is that it utilizes footnotes, or endnotes; whatever you want to call them, they are often difficult for students to deal with the first time they write a Chicago paper.  It is far easier to write up a simple in text citation, as is seen in other research paper styles like APA and MLA.  However, once you get the hang of marking your footnotes, you will find it gets easier and easier to remember them.  Like any other type of paper, it will include a section devoted to the bibliography.

For the sake of this article, let’s say you are writing a paper an anthropology class – Magic and Religion in Preliterate Society, for example.  Anthropology is a humanities course, and would reasonably require this particular research paper format.  Here is an example of what a footnote would look like in a Chicago based paper:

In the Beng culture, there is a disease known as gbri which means dirt and “a baby gets it if she’s touched by a woman who’s considered sexually polluted.”¹

The endnote (or footnote) will look like this:

1. Alma Gottlieb and Philip Graham, Parallel Worlds: An Anthropologist and a Writer Encounter Africa (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1993), 242.

As you can see, the name of the author – or authors – go first, followed by the title of the document.  It is not underlined.  The city in which the publisher is located, the name of the publisher, and the year the work was published go in parenthesis.  This is followed by the page of the work on which the quote or citation is located.  As you can also see, this portion of a Chicago style research paper uses commas rather than periods.  The same is not so for the actual citation in the bibliography, which looks like this:

Gottlieb, Alma and Philip Graham. Parallel Worlds: An Anthropologist and a Writer Encounter
Africa.  Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1993.

A Chicago style research paper may seem confusing and even difficult at first, but like say, the going gets much easier as you go along.  If you are having trouble from the get go, just take a look at some research paper examples which utilize this particular format.  Seeing everything “in action” may help you more.

Research Paper Format Revisited

Remember these Guidelines for Research Paper Format

A research paper format is simply how your paper looks like when you submit it to your professor. Where do you place the title? Where do you put the pages? These and some other things are also important in your research paper. It helps it making your paper look formal and uniform with the others.

These are the guidelines in formatting college research papers:

1. Use a 8 ½” x 11” white paper. Don’t use paper with designs or borders. A quality plain essay is the convention.

2. The research paper format for MLA paper usually doesn’t need a title page especially if it is only a 10-page paper. In the first page of your paper, write the following one entry per line against the left margin double-spaced:

• Name
• Name of your Professor
• Name of the Class
• Date

After these, write your title in the center of the paper. The research paper titles are not in all caps or in bold. However, you should capitalize all first letters of the words except for the prepositions.

3. For the pagination of an MLA research paper format, you put the page number in the right header and then followed by your surname.

4. Spacing is double-spaced for the entire paper. Do not put extra spaces below the title and in between paragraphs.

5. If your professor or teacher doesn’t give instructions on fonts, most research paper styles use 12 pt. Times New Roman.

6. MLA doesn’t give any guidelines for the sub-titles. Many research paper samples put them against the left margin simply because it looks more appropriate than putting them in center.

Although frequently overlooked, your research paper format can give added value to your paper.   A properly formatted paper will give the impression that you took time to submit a clean and formal paper.  It will help in your professor’s or teacher’s decision on what grade to give your research paper. Even with your paper, first impressions also last.

Suggestion for Abortion Research Papers
27
November
2008

Did your teacher give you a research paper assignment with the topic about abortion? Do you feel that the topic is very common and you cannot think of something new to write about it? Are you stuck with the same ideas written by the others before? Don’t worry. Abortion research papers may be written by thousands of other students already but there are also thousands of ways you can tackle the topic. Abortion is a very broad topic. If your assignment is to write less than 10 pages of research, you should choose a more specific topic about abortion.

You can explore how abortion is related to the rights of women. If you choose this topic, you’ll have a well focused paper. This is one of the high school research paper ideas about abortion that can give you a very good grade. Your research will center on the argument that it is the woman’s right to choose what to do with her body. You can say that many women are impregnated against their will—they may have abusive husbands or they were raped.

There are many research paper titles that you can come up with if you choose this specific angle about abortion. You can entitle your paper, “Abortion with Focus on Women’s Perspective.” Another good title for abortion research papers is “Feminist View on Abortion.” There are many other titles that I’m sure you can come up with. If you can’t think of any, just leave it for now. When you finish your paper, it will be easier to think of the title.

When you are doing your research, you will focus only on the perspective of women. What are the advantages of abortion to women and what are its advantages to women? If you like to pursue with this research, you will probably use APA style.  But abortion research papers your teacher might assign other research paper styles such as MLA.  Whatever the style is, just make sure that when you follow the guidelines for the specific style that is assigned to you.

If you don’t have time to research or finish your paper, you can still pass your paper on time by asking for help from those who can finish your paper in time for the date of your submission. Masterpapers.com can help you with your problem. You can just tell them what you want to say in your paper, what focus you want your paper to have and they will give you the paper that you want. The writers at Masterpapers.com will assist you in making your paper.

There are so many ways to write about abortion research papers. But you will have a fresh topic if you choose to focus on how women think about abortion. It is a very good topic and whether you write your paper or you ask for help, I’m sure you’ll receive a good grade if you have this focused topic.

Writing a Research Paper Proposal
13
September
2008

Once you reach a certain point in your undergraduate studies, you can pretty much count on having to submit a research paper proposal for all the papers you write.  Your humble author will be perfectly honest with you – it is a tedious and seemingly pointless process.  It generally seems completely unnecessary at the time and it is only in retrospect that you will usually understand the importance of the proposal.  Hindsight may be twenty/twenty and all of that, but four years after graduating, this particular author still finds the whole process tedious.  But if you do not find yourselves with a very new, very inexperienced, but very pompous sociology/anthropology professor who does not know what she is doing, you guys should be fine!

Simply put, a research paper proposal is where you present the idea, issue, or research you want to pursue in your writing.  Furthermore, it will show your professor that you have actually taken the time to think about both the research paper writing process and the research process itself.  It will also show that you have already taken the time to gather some materials and sources.  It will also give you a chance to see which of the many research paper styles your professor wants you to use, and to make sure you understand the appropriate style before you actually write your paper.  This is more important than you may think because some of those inexperienced professors will give you a research paper example to follow but then pronounce it incorrect when you turn in your proposal.  If this happens to you, milk it for all you are worth!

So, clearly, you need to know how to cite research paper proposals as well.  Generally, you will do this in APA format, because most research based papers follow that format.  Following a research paper template can help you see what you are supposed to do.  To that end, let’s discuss the outline your research paper proposal should follow.  For starters, you need to state the question you intend to answer with your research.  You have to explain something, that is the whole point of research papers.  After that comes a brief literature review, wherein you will review any major and important works which are relevant to your research paper topic; furthermore, they need to be indicative of the topic in some way.  Third comes another statement explaining what your argument actually is, as well as a statement explaining how your argument will be different and innovative.  You see, the literature you use in your review should be relevant; however, you need to discuss something which has not already been proven or discussed to death.  Next comes an outline of your paper itself – introduction, body, conclusion, bibliography, et cetera.  Next comes the bibliography for the proposal. Learn where you can get sample papers.

By and large, a research paper proposal does not have to be long at all.  Generally, they are no longer than three or four pages.  However, the quality of the content needs to be high.  You need to explain yourself very well.  Again, a research paper template on a proposal can also come in handy here.

The Aspects of an APA Style Research Paper
8
September
2008

The odds that you will have to write at least one APA style research paper during your academic career are quite high.  The APA format is one of most commonly used citation styles, right up there with MLA.  The APA acronym stands for the American Psychological Association.  As you might therefore imagine, the style is especially popular in psychology classes, along with sociology courses and anthropology courses, among a number of others.  A lot of it really depends on your professors’ individual preferences, but in general, you will find that the aforementioned classes rely on APA, while English and literature classes rely on MLA.

Usually, the separate research paper styles are divided by the category of classes.  So, the APA style research paper is most common in any classes – or with any papers – which involve research, especially of the scientific type.  This is because this particular format is very clean, concise, and understandable, which is vital when presenting any type of research.

For that reason, this type of research paper format is also very common in undergraduate classes.  Generally, the essays and research papers you write in high school are done in a basic MLA style.  So, once you get to college, you are not precisely accustomed to really intensive writing.  Writing an APA style research paper is a good place to start when you do get there, because it is so easy to understand. You should check some good research paper examples before starting to write.

For example, the format for APA essays and research papers, technically speaking, involves using double spacing and a 12 point font which is easy to read, such as Arial or Times New Roman.  The paper margins need to be one inch on all four sides.  You need to stay away from any first person speech – i.e., you really should not use “I,” “me,” “mine,” et cetera.  Abbreviations should be spelled out the first time you use them and you should not use contractions.  When writing numbers, you need to spell out numbers zero (0) to nine (9); when writing numbers 10 or more, you can use the numerals.  In APA research paper format, the title should be somewhere between ten to twelve words, and is used to summarize the primary idea of the paper.  The first two or three words of the title are used when numbering the pages as well; they go right before the page number in the upper right hand corner of all the pages.  To get a better idea, feel free to check out a research paper template or two which exhibits this particular format.

These are just a few rules used in an APA style research paper, but have no fear.  You will not be expected to know how to cite a research paper in this format with no foreknowledge.  Generally, your first year English professor will either require you to purchase a reference book containing information on all the main research paper styles, or else he or she will tell you where to get one.  If your professor does simply suggest that you buy such a book, definitely take him or her up on it.  You will be able to use it well into graduate school, and it will make it much easier for you to write any type of paper. A Look at the Research Paper Styles
26
August
2008

There are several different research paper styles.  You will likely come into contact with most, if not all, of them during the course of your academic career.  After all, you are going to be writing quite a lot of essays and research papers.  So, whether you are at that point already or are simply preparing for college, familiarizing yourself with the different styles can be very beneficial. On the other hand there is an opportunity of buying custom research papers.

First of all, there is the APA writing style.  APA stands for American Psychological Association.  If you are taking any sociology, psychology, or anthropology courses, you will definitely be working with this type of research paper format.  It is most commonly used in both the social sciences and general sciences.  If you are going to rank it, then it is probably the second biggest and widely used of all the research paper styles.

Of all the styles, the MLA style is probably the most “popular” – or at least the most common   MLA stands for Modern Language Association, so as you might imagine, this is generally used in literature and English courses.  In some cases, some subjects and courses under the social sciences heading use MLA as well.  It is pretty much a guarantee that your freshman literature professor will help you familiarize yourself with this type of research paper format.

Other research paper styles include the Chicago style, the Harvard style, and the Turabian style.  If you have not noticed yet, these are all citation formats.  In general, these three are seen less often than APA and MLA.  Of the three, Chicago is probably the most common, or at least the most widely recognized. Get more research paper topic ideas.

Odds are, every professor you have will have his or her own preference concerning research paper format.  Usually, during your first year in college, your first literature professor will also either require or recommend some type of reference book.  This book will have comprehensive information on the MLA, APA, and Chicago styles for certain, and will likely cite examples of the other styles as well.  You will be able to see, step by step, how to set up in text citations, foot notes, your bibliography page, your cover page, and you will even see how to properly number the pages of your essays and research papers.

For instance, in research papers that use the MLA style, when you number your page, your last name has to go beside it.  There is a specific format necessary for your bibliography page, and your cover page has to be set up just so.  With APA research papers, the in text citations are set up differently than in MLA, and when you number your pages, you put the title of the paper beside the number, rather than your last name.

The very reason it is important to be familiar with all the different research paper styles is because they are so different.  Knowing the differences down to the smallest details can help you from making mistakes during the research paper editing process.  Furthermore, you will be far less likely to mess up during the research paper writing period – that is, you will not screw up your in text citations or quote anything incorrectly.

Critical Analysis Research Paper Styles
24
August
2008

Today we are going to discuss the elements of the critical analysis research paper. Before doing so, however, it is important to understand exactly what it is. There are many different research paper styles. This is only one. For a lot of people, the critical analysis is actually the easiest style to o understand. Basically, it is used to explain or defend an idea or argument about a specific work. You are interpreting the literature on an analytical level, which simply means that you need to be thorough. Being meticulous is necessary because critical analyses are supposed to raise meaningful questions and pinpoint thought provoking issues about your argument.

Now then, the first step in critical analysis research paper writing is choosing the research paper topic. In many cases, your professor will tell you exactly what you need to write about, or else he or she will give you a broad topic that you are allowed to narrow down on your own. Whatever the cases, there are many opportunities to craft really interesting research papers when you are doing an analysis. Generally, you will be dealing with a primary aspect in a short story, a novel, a play, a poem, et cetera. You have to back up your ideas and arguments with specific examples from the work in question.

There are many research paper styles to this end as well. For example, you might choose to do a character analysis. If so, you need to discuss how the character you choose to write about is disclosed, developed, et cetera. What is the character’s biggest, most distinguishing trait or feature? How does his or her actions blend in with the theme of the store?

The point of view critical analysis research paper is a popular choice as well. Basically all you have to do is discuss the work’s point of view, especially in terms of how the approach affects the entire work and how it relates to the theme.

You can also analyze the setting of the work. This involves the physical location(s), the period of time the work takes place, the social environment, et cetera.

You can also discuss the theme itself, and/or the central ideas of the work about which you are writing. This involves defining the theme and analyzing the way the author developed it. Typically, you will need to discuss how the theme relates to the four areas of the human experience: the nature of humanity; of society; of humankind as it relates to the world; and of ethical responsibility.

You can also analyze the work’s specific problems or issues. By the same token, you may decide to discuss the major conflicts in the story. You can also adopt the compare and contrast structure of a critical analysis research paper. It is one of the easiest research paper styles. As well, the subject of symbolism frequently makes for very interesting research papers.

As you can see, writing a critical analysis research paper does not have to be difficult at all. If anything, it is a rather simple form of writing. The research paper format used will generally follow the five paragraph essay structure, but even when it does not, the format can be clean, concise, and rather simple itself. As always, if you are having difficulty, you can find research paper help from your professors, in the library, and even on the internet.
