The Key to Writing an Interesting College Research Paper
You will write many research papers during your academic career, even if you do not continue your education after high school. However, college research papers are a different breed altogether. They need to be more detailed, more thoroughly researched, more in depth, and they are even typically much, much longer than the ones you will write in high school. Without a doubt, your high school teachers will be preparing you for the papers you will write at the college or university you attend. However, they can only prep you so much. In the college environment, you are generally left to sink or swim. You will get lots of help from your instructors, of course, but the point is that it is always better to know what you are in for even before you get there.
Now, as stated, you are going to be writing a lot of college research papers. As a matter of fact, there is a good chance that you will have to write one in practically every class you take. There are even some math classes which will require you to research and write a paper. This may be a biased opinion, but English research papers are some of the most interesting papers you will have to write. It really does not matter what course you are taking — Shakespearean drama, 18th Century Literature, courses devoted to fairy tales, et cetera. They all provide wonderful opportunities to write fun and interesting papers, if you look at it the right way.
Throughout your college career, depending only on what courses you are taking, you will have to write business research papers, or biology papers, chemistry papers, papers on interpersonal communications, and so on and on and on.
One thing you need to know going into college is the proper research paper format — or formats, as the case may be correctly. Most of these, you will learn in high school. At the very least, you will come into college knowing the proper MLA style of format. Once in college, you will also need to familiarize yourself with other formats, such as APA and Chicago style.
The next thing you need to know is how to come up with good research paper topics, no matter what the paper is for, what it is about, or what the general subject is. To this end, you need to know a few things. First and foremost, you never want to choose the easy topic. The easy topics have all been written about ad nauseam. They are boring. You want your topic to be interesting and thought provoking. Otherwise you could get a bad grade just for being uninteresting.
Finally, college research papers are hugely dependent on research paper titles. A good title is as important as an interesting topic. You want it to be eye catching. You want it to grab the reader’s attention above all else — otherwise your reader will just pass right over it. The best thing you can possibly do is grab the reader by the throat — figuratively speaking — right from the beginning.
